History

999 NE
Tarmon Gaidon begins. Dark friends throughout the Westland's rise up and cause chaos, as hordes of Shadow spawn pour from the Blight, drowning the Borderlands in blood. The Dragon Reborn sends forces to hold them back, and begins to gather the armies of the Westland's in preparation for an assault on Shayol Ghul.

The Forsaken deals two powerful blows to the forces of Light. First, several large armies of Shadow spawn and Dread lords are transported into the regions west of the Mountains of Mist, and begin to lay waste to the area. The Forces of Light and Shadow battle to a standstill, and the lands around them are systematically destroyed. While the Dragon Reborn is thus distracted, a smaller force is sent to Tar Valon.

In an event that will shape the world for decades to come, they attack the White Tower. For the first time in history, the Shining Walls are broken. With the exception of a small handful already outside the Tower, nearly every last Novice and Accepted are lost.

The Dragon Reborn strikes at the very heart of the Shadow... at Shayol Ghul itself. His forces, still recovering from the loss of the White Tower are whittled down little by small due to the sheer waves sent against them by the Shadow. In an act of desperation to save what remains of his forces, the Dragon challenges Shai'tan himself in a duel that shook the very earth they stood upon.

In a surge of untold power the Dark One unleashed his attack that battered down the defenses of the Dragon Reborn and crushed him, leaving only a smoking crater to mark where the worlds savior had stood.

Despairing and deprived of their leader the forces of the Light made a last valiant stand there on the slopes of Shayol Ghul only to be decimated nearly to a man. Spirits breaking all but the most devout left the field, hiding where they could and on the run from the forces that hounded their every step.

It has only been 6 months since the Breaking but already things as people once knew it have changed. The chosen have settled into their various places (see geography) and have begun to rule with an iron hand. Any survivors who were at the last battle are scattered, as are any who survived the strategic strikes by Chaos and posed any threat or resistance. As a whole the common populace has remained fairly unscathed, at least in the larger cities. Smaller settlements throughout the realms were either untouched or completed destroyed. Stedding populations were either wiped out or have gone into hiding and Chaos patrols the known steddings with regularity
